For the Custard
- 3 large eggs
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 1 tablespoon caster sugar
- pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon orange zest
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 8 slices brioche bread or white loaf bread, each slice cut into thirds
For the Cinnamon Sugar
- ¼ cup white granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
For Serving
- maple syrup
- fresh strawberries, sliced
In a large bowl, beat together the eggs, heavy cream, caster sugar, salt, orange zest, ground cinnamon, and vanilla extract until well combined.
Dip each piece of bread into the egg mixture, turn a few times until coated on all sides evenly.
Place the bread pieces in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving some space in between each piece to allow for even cooking. Work in batches as necessary to not overcrowd the basket.
Set the air fryer to 375°F(190°C) and cook until they are golden brown and crispy, about 8 to 10 minutes, tossing halfway through the cooking time.
In a separate bowl, mix together the sugar and ground cinnamon to make the cinnamon sugar.
Remove the french toast sticks from the air fryer and immediately roll them into the cinnamon sugar. Make sure to coat all sides evenly.
Serve the French toast sticks hot with maple syrup and fresh strawberries!
- Cream: While heavy cream will add the richest custard texture and flavor, you could use half-and-half or even milk here and still have a wonderful dish!
- Bread Thickness: A good thick slice of bread is best for cutting into sticks. Thinner slices may overcook or even fall apart.
- Dipping The Sticks: Unlike overnight French toast, which is soaked for hours, these sticks should be quickly (but thoroughly) dipped. You don’t want a lot of excess egg mixture dripping off of them in the air fryer.
- Storing: If you have leftovers, be sure to package and refrigerate them within two hours of cooking, for food safety. I like to store them in hard-sided airtight containers, but zip-top bags are also great. You can store them in the refrigerator for 3 - 4 days.
- Freezing: To freeze French toast sticks successfully, place them in a single layer, not touching, on a clean plate or baking sheet. Freeze until frozen solid, and then pack into freezer bags. From there, just keep them in your freezer for up to two months. Reheat directly from frozen.
- Reheating: To reheat, throw your cold French toast sticks in a toaster oven (not a regular toaster - they may be soft and sink into the sides of the toaster, causing a fire!). Or just bake them at 350°F until warmed through.
