For the Apple Filling

  • 6 to 8 medium apples, peeled and cut into chunks
  • cup brown sugar
  • cup all-purpose flour
  • cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • pinch salt
  • pinch ground nutmeg

For the Crisp Topping

For Serving

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Grease a 9x13 baking dish with butter. Set aside.
  • Combine the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a large bowl. Add the apples to the mixture, and toss to coat. Drizzle in the melted butter, and toss again.
  • Transfer the coated apples to the previously prepared baking dish, and set aside.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, brown sugar, and chilled butter. Mix well to make a crumbly topping. Sprinkle evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden-brown and the fruit juices are bubbling around the edges.
  • Remove from oven and let rest 10 to 15 minutes.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature, with ice cream and caramel sauce if desired.
