Chocolate Mug Cake is perfect for when you want dessert but don’t want to make an entire cake or deal with leftovers! This mug cake cooks right in your microwave and is moist, fluffy, and indulgent.
What do you do if you’re craving a big slice of chocolate cake but don’t have the time or energy to actually bake a cake? Two words – Mug. Cake. I’m serious. You can have a heaping slice of decadent chocolate cake just for one. You’ll be putting the fork to your mouth in – wait for it – less than 5 minutes!
Why You’ll Love This Chocolate Mug Cake Recipe
- Perfect size. This little chocolate chip mug cake is exactly what it sounds like – a cake baked right in a mug. Mug cakes are the most perfect, individual-sized treats. It’s one serving and bakes in just about a minute, and all you need is a mug and a fork.
- Chocolate decadence. Good things can come in small packages! This little chocolate cake in a mug has all of the great flavors of a traditional cake in a single serving.
- Super quick and easy. Does it get any easier than dessert in 5 minutes? I don’t think so! You’ll never want for a good dessert again!
Recipe Ingredients
- Butter
- Flour: You can also use almond flour for a gluten free treat.

- Egg
- Chocolate Chips
- Vanilla
- Baking Powder
- Salt
- Whipped Cream
How to Make Chocolate Mug Cake
Ready in just five minutes, this chocolate cake in a mug makes the perfect individual dessert. Check the recipe card at the end of this post for exact ingredient amounts and detailed instructions.
- Melt. Place butter in a 12-ounce microwave-safe mug and melt it in the microwave. This should take about 30 seconds.
- Add. To the melted butter add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, beaten egg, chocolate chips, vanilla, baking powder, and salt.
- Stir. Stir everything together with a fork until it’s thoroughly combined.
- Microwave. Cook for 50 seconds to 1 minute in the microwave. The top of the cake should be set.
- Top and serve. Top your mug cake with whipped cream and more chocolate chips, then enjoy.
Recipe Tips
- Be sure not to over mix your batter. If you do, your cake will be more tough and less fluffy.
- Use the proper size mug. The batter will rise, so unless you want an actual volcano of chocolate lava in your microwave, use a 12-ounce microwave-safe mug.
- Don’t walk away from the microwave while it’s cooking. You want to keep a close eye on your cake and stop the microwave if it looks like the center is set.
Serving Suggestions
I like to serve my chocolate mug cake topped with whipped cream and extra chocolate chips. But one of my favorites is topping it with raspberry sauce or blueberry sauce. You could also just simply enjoy it with a side of my mocha iced coffee.

Chocolate Mug Cake
Ingredients
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour,, or use ¼ cup almond flour for low carb version
- 2 tablespoons sugar,, use monk fruit sweetener for low carb
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1 large egg,, beaten
- 1 tablespoon chocolate chips,, plus more for garnish, optional
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- pinch of salt
- whipped cream,, for topping
Instructions
- Place butter in a 12-ounce microwave-safe mug and melt it in the microwave for about 30 seconds.
- To the melted butter, add flour, sugar, cocoa powder, beaten egg, chocolate chips, vanilla, baking powder, and salt; stir with a fork until thoroughly combined.
- Cook for 50 seconds to 1 minute in the microwave or until the top of the cake is set.
- Top with whipped cream and more chocolate chips; serve.
Notes
- Avoid Over-mixing: Mix the ingredients until just combined. Over-mixing can make the cake tough.
- Mug Size: Use a mug that can hold 12 ounces. This allows the cake to rise without spilling over.
- Microwave Power: Microwaves vary in power, so start with a shorter time and add more as needed. Generally, a minute to a minute and a half is sufficient, but it may vary.
- Monitor the Cooking: Keep an eye on your cake as it cooks. If it rises too much, stop the microwave, let it settle, and then continue.
- Check for Doneness: Use a toothpick to check if the cake is done. It should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
- Let it Cool: Give it a minute or two to cool down after cooking. This allows the cake to set and develop its flavors.
