Sweet and nutty, these pecan pie brownies are a pie-inspired variation of a traditional brownie. I love that they are topped with the pecan pie filling rather than folding it into the batter.

Why You’ll Love These Pecan Pie Brownies

  • Like the pie – but better! If you’re a fan of pecan pie, you’re sure to love these brownies. I love the addition of chocolate to the classic pecan pie flavors, and you don’t have to deal with making a crust.
  • So easy. Keep your life simple and use boxed brownie mix to streamline this pecan pie brownie recipe!
  • Flavorful. Basic brownies are always a hit, but why not add a bit more? The crunchy nuts and touch of honey elevate these brownies above the ordinary.

What You’ll Need

Here’s a quick glance at the ingredients in this pecan pie brownies recipe. Check the recipe card at the end of this post for the full ingredient amounts.

  • Brownie Mix – Any brand of boxed brownie mix will work.
  • Water
  • Vegetable Oil Or another type of neutral oil.
  • Eggs – Use large eggs.
  • Honey – Substitute maple syrup or granulated sugar if necessary.
  • Brown Sugar – I use light brown sugar but substitute dark brown sugar if needed.
  • Butter – Unsalted butter is best in this recipe.
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla Extract – Use pure vanilla extract or try vanilla paste.
  • Pecans – Pecans are ideal for authentic-tasting pecan pie flavor, but you could substitute walnuts if needed.

How to Make Pecan Pie Brownies

This easy recipe is quick and uncomplicated to make. I’ve outlined how to do it below.

  1. Make the brownies. Combine the brownie mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Whisk the ingredients until well combined.
  2. Bake. Transfer the batter to a lined baking pan and bake according to the package directions.
  3. Make filling. Whisk together the honey, light brown sugar, and unsalted butter. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and vanilla. Then add the egg mixture to the butter mixture.
  4. Add pecans. Gently fold in the pecans and stir to coat the nuts evenly.
  5. Add filling. Remove the brownies from the oven and pour the pecan filling over the top.
  6. Finish. Return the pan to the oven and bake until the pecan pie filling is set.
  7. Cool. Remove from the oven and let the brownies cool thoroughly before cutting.

Tips for Success

Follow my tips to help you make these pecan pie brownies turn out perfectly every time:

  • Make Ahead: Pecan pie brownies keep well, so you can make these up to 2 days before you want to serve them.
  • Double the Recipe: Go ahead and double this recipe if you want to make enough brownies to serve a crowd. Make sure to pick up an extra box of brownie mix to keep it easy.
  • Add Chocolate: For a little extra touch of chocolate, you can stir in some chopped semisweet or dark chocolate, or add semisweet chocolate chips to the batter.
  • Substitute Nuts: While these are pecan pie brownies, if you don’t have pecans on hand you can substitute an equal amount of other chopped nuts, such as walnuts or almonds.
  • Cool Completely: Let the brownies cool completely – they should not be hot to the touch – before cutting them. This will make for cleaner edges when you cut into them.

Serving Suggestions

Serve pecan pie brownies a la mode, or nibble on them for an afternoon sweet treat. Here’s how to serve these wonderfully nutty brownies:

  • With ice cream. Top a warm brownie with a big scoop of vanilla or butter pecan ice cream for the perfect dessert! Or make a sundae with a pecan pie brownie as the base, with a drizzle of chocolate sauce and a sprinkle of chopped pecans to finish.
  • Add whipped cream. A dollop of softly whipped cream is a great accompaniment to a pecan pie brownie.
  • Coffee. Keep it simple and drink a piping hot cup of coffee with a pecan pie brownie. Or, make a refreshing Pumpkin Cream Cold Brew Coffee or Mocha Iced Coffee to go with a plate of brownies.

How to Store Brownies

Store brownies in an airtight container and keep them on the counter for up to 5 days. You could also store them in the fridge for up to 1 week. To freeze, wrap each brownie in plastic wrap, place them in a freezer-safe bag or container, and store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw the brownies thoroughly in the fridge before serving.

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to the temperature specified on the brownie mix box. Typically, it’s around 350°F.
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the brownie mix, water, vegetable oil, and eggs. Whisk the ingredients until well combined, ensuring there are no lumps in the batter.
  • Grease a baking pan with butter or line it with parchment paper, leaving the edges of the paper over the edge of the pan so that the brownies can be removed more easily after baking. Pour the brownie batter into it, spreading it out evenly.
  • Follow the baking instructions on the brownie mix box, and bake it for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
  • While the brownies are baking, prepare the pecan pie filling. Whisk together the honey, brown sugar, and unsalted butter over medium heat. Stir the mixture continuously until the sugar is dissolved and the butter is melted.
  • In a separate bowl whisk together the room temperature eggs and vanilla.
  • Allow the butter mixture to cool slightly, then add the egg and vanilla mixture to the butter mixture and whisk well.
  • Gently fold in the pecans until they are evenly coated with the pecan pie filling.
  • Remove the brownies from the oven and pour the prepared pecan pie filling over the baked brownies, spreading it out evenly.
  • Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, or until the pecan pie filling is set.
  • Remove from the oven and allow the Pecan Pie Brownies to cool completely before cutting into squares or bars.
