Bagel Chips are a popular snack food that can be found in grocery stores, but making them at home is easy! Savory, crunchy, bready, and buttery, they’re great for appetizers, snacking, and more.
A Super Easy Snack Idea!
Does your snack routine need a boost of something fresh and different? Try swapping the same old popcorn and chips for some crunchy, homemade bagel chips. Bagel chips are a great way to use up stale or leftover bagels – instead of throwing them away, just slice them up and turn them into a delicious snack!
Bagel chips are fabulous for a quick bite, or for parties and gatherings. They go with almost any dip, especially hummus or spinach dip, and they can be dressed up with toppings like smoked salmon, cream cheese, and capers for a fancy appetizer. Plus, you won’t believe how easy they are to make.
Are Bagel Chips Healthier Than Chips?
Bagel chips are a healthy snack if you choose a good-quality bagel. Read the ingredients label to ensure you’re comfortable with what’s in the bagel – and adjust the seasoning ingredients. Overall, however, homemade snacks like this tend to be healthier than store-bought snacks or fast-food sides like fries or potato chips, which might be cooked in unhealthy oils or loaded with preservatives.
What Are Bagel Chips Made Of?
Essentially, bagel chips are made of bagels! You’ll also need some seasoning ingredients, which I’ll share here. Plus, I’m including the ingredients for an easy mix-and-serve cream cheese dip. Here’s what you’ll need:
For the Bagel Chips
- Bagel: You can use any kind of bagel here – I often go with plain bagels, egg bagels, or other neutral bagels so that the seasoning mixture can stand out.
- Butter: Unsalted butter, melted.
- Garlic Powder: Garlic powder is so flavorful! Onion powder is also good, or a combination of the two, if you like.
- Italian Seasoning: Dry Italian seasoning or another seasoning blend of your choice.
- Rosemary: Chopped fresh rosemary elevates the recipe in a good way. You can leave it out and still have a good bagel chip, but it does add such a zesty freshness. Use only the leaves, no thorny stems.
- Salt and Pepper
For The Cream Cheese Dip
- Cream Cheese: Full-fat cream cheese, or you can use low-fat (also known as Neufchatel).
- Pickles: You can use any pickles that you like. I like dill pickles.
- Garlic: Fresh minced garlic. You could substitute powder if you like.
- Salt
How to Make Homemade Bagel Chips
Let’s take a look at the process for making your own homemade bagel chips. It’s super easy, doesn’t take long, and is perfect for family night or game night!
- Prep the Bagels and Seasoning Mixture. First, you’ll want to preheat the oven to 350°F. Next, grab your bagels and slice them into thin rounds, about ⅛ inch thick. Then take a small bowl and whisk together all of the seasoning ingredients: melted butter, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, chopped fresh rosemary, salt, and pepper.
- Season the Bagel Rounds. Brush the bagel rounds on both sides with the butter mixture and place them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake and Cool. Bake the rounds for 10 – 12 minutes, or until the bagel chips are golden brown and crispy. Remove the baked bagel chips from the oven, and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.
- Make the Dip and Serve. Meanwhile, combine all the ingredients for the cream dip in a bowl, and stir well. When the bagel chips have cooled, serve them in the prepared sauce and enjoy!
Helpful Tips
I hope you’ll try this simple recipe, and enjoy your own homemade, crunchy bagel chips. These helpful tips will make them that much more irresistible!
- Seasonings: In this recipe, the chips are flavored with garlic powder and herbs, but you can experiment with different spices and seasonings to create your own unique flavor combinations.
- Dip: A quick recipe for a creamy dip is provided, but you can also serve these chips with hummus, salsa, or any other dip of your choice.
- Slicing: I like slicing the bagel into small rounds, but you can cut it any way you like as long as the pieces are about ⅛ inch thick. Bagels that are already split in half, for instance, can be cut into large, thin rounds and then cut into smaller pieces.
Serving Suggestions
Bagel chips are a great snack with almost any dip, salad, or soup. They’re just right for adding a great crispy crunch to your favorite foods. Try these ideas, and see what you think!
- Dip: You can’t beat bagel chips dipped into hot, savory Slow Cooker Spinach Artichoke Dip! It’s a classic party appetizer that will keep you coming back for more.
- Salad: Use them in place of croutons, or serve them with a dish of this amazing Egg Salad with Pickles. It’s a deli-style lunch or dinner idea that’s fun and easy.
- Soup: For ultra-coziness, float some of the bagel chips in a cup or bowl of Roasted Tomato Basil Soup. Yum.
How to Store
- Store your bagel chips in airtight containers and keep them in a cool, dry place like a pantry. No need to refrigerate these treats – they’ll keep for several days or even longer!
Can I Freeze These?
- While you can try freezing bagel chips, you should note that the crispy crunch may be affected by freezing and thawing. The good news is, these last for a while at room temperature.
- If you do freeze them, place them in a freezer bag and press out as much air as possible while you seal it.
